Spear Tip Cover aka Dinghy Protector
For both safety and courtesy, make a spear “tip cover” for your pole spear. It’s simple. Just cut a piece of rubber hose that will fit snuggly over your spear tip.
This is the courteous thing to do if you are getting into a friend’s inflatable dinghy to go spear fishing. I know that I cringe when someone gets into my dinghy without something to protect the spear tip. I’m talking about not only poking a hole in the dinghy, but poking a hole in me! I carry a spare tip protector with my dive gear and gladly give it to anyone without one.
I keep the tip protector on my spear even after getting into the water. Not until I see something to spear or until I am away from the other divers do I remove the tip protector. I slip it off and put it down my shirt or in my speedo. I then put it back on the spear before getting into the dinghy.
