Bilge Alarm

I believe the ideal situation is to have a red LED light on the cockpit bulkhead that comes on anytime your bilge pump activates. Until you can get that done here is a solution that will carry you through.

Install a “water alarm” in your bilge. These are very loud alarms that are made to warn you if you washing machine or bathtub is over flowing. They can be bought at most hardware stores or home centers. The cost is under $10.

They are very easy to install. Just put the sensor in your bilge area and the alarm in an area where you’ll be able to hear it. It is battery operated so no electrical wiring is required. The sensors are very sensitive, so place it where it will not get wet in normal sailing and heeling conditions.

This becomes your “high water alarm”. It should sound off if the water your bilge gets higher than normal. It will warn you if your pump is not operating properly or if your pump is not keeping up with the incoming water.

Another application relates to the security of your boat at the marina when you are not aboard. Have the alarm placed so that someone on the dock at your marina can hear it. That way if your boat starts taking on water in her slip, someone can contact you. I’ve seen a sign on a lifeline with the owners contact info for this purpose. It’s another measure of safety.

There are more expensive fancier gadgets too. There are some that will notify you on your smart phone in addition to the audible alarm. Costs are from $7 to $39.

It is not the ideal solution, but at least you’ve got a warning system before things get out of hand.

Bill , I have seen digital bilge pump counters, they they advance each time the pump comes on. Very good if you return to the boat and find the counter has recorded several cycles of the pump. You know something is leaking into the boat. You don’t have to wait till the pump wears out before you realize a leak exists.
    I enjoy your posts,
